What exactly is Scalp Micropigmentation?
Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) is a non-invasive cosmetic tattoo procedure that uses specialized micro-needles to deposit medical-grade pigment into the upper dermis of the scalp. It replicates the appearance of natural hair follicles, creating the illusion of a fuller, closely shaved head. It is not a hair transplant and requires no surgery, no downtime, and no ongoing medication.
Will it look natural? Can people tell?
When performed by a skilled artist, SMP is virtually undetectable. We carefully match pigment to your natural hair color and skin tone, using precise dot sizes and varied density patterns that mimic real follicle growth. Our goal is always natural — never the drawn on look.
How much does it hurt?
Most clients describe the sensation as mild discomfort — similar to light scratching. The scalp is one of the least sensitive areas for tattooing. We use topical numbing agents throughout the procedure to ensure your comfort, and most clients relax or even fall asleep during treatment.
Will the pigment turn blue or green over time?
Not with modern techniques and pigments. Blue or green discoloration typically results from artists using traditional tattoo ink at incorrect depths. We exclusively use carbon-based, organic pigments specifically formulated for SMP, applied at the precise epidermal depth to ensure the pigment retains its natural tone as it fades gracefully over time.
How many sessions will I need?
Most SMP treatments require 2 to 3 sessions, spaced approximately 7 to 14 days apart. The first session establishes the foundation and hairline design. Subsequent sessions build density, depth, and realism through careful layering.
What is the healing process like?
After each session, you may experience mild redness and slight tenderness for 2 to 4 days. The treated area will appear darker initially, then lighten by approximately 30 to 40 percent as the skin heals over 7 to 10 days. Avoid direct sunlight, swimming, and heavy sweating for about 5 days after each session.
How long do results last?
SMP is considered semi-permanent to permanent. With proper care and sun protection, results typically last 4 to 8 years before a touch-up session may be desired to refresh density and crispness.
